Capture Less, Create More

I blogged almost daily for about two and a half years when I originally created my blog. I deleted my blog on Blogger about a year ago when I migrated to Substack. There are more than a hundred articles still archived there. By most measures on the Internet, I’ve had times where I was a consistent writer.

I want to get back to that habit; but it often looks like how I want to get back to exercise. Lots of idea; little action.

So, I’m challenging myself to start capturing less to create more. I’m GREAT at capturing notes. I have digital archives in Evernote, Notion, Roam Research, Google Drive, One Drive, and there is probably still a 3.5" floppy disk hanging out somewhere in my studio/office.

But, most of those notes aren't really for me. They were meant to help me share something with others. Maybe it was a piece of artwork I found beautiful. Maybe it was a quote I found inspiring. There are definitely books I read that I want to share with the world — and more importantly share how they made my life better or what I learned from the experience of trying to put what I learned into action. After all, experiences are our best teachers.

So, for the last two or three weeks I have been relentlessly unsubscribing from things in my inbox and just generally trying to make quicker decisions about things that come into my world so the mental weight of the decision isn’t holding me down and keeping me from creating. All of this is in the space of trying to create more by capturing less.

What do you want to do and what’s holding you back?
