I just returned from a five night Disney Cruise in the Bahamas. The on board experience was wonderful and the weather was fabulous. By COVID standards, it was five incredibly relaxing and refreshing days.

On the cruise, I challenged my friend to a game of shuffleboard — something neither of us has ever played. Shuffleboard is seemingly easy. I’ll summarize it in just four rules.

  • You push a puck along a court with a specially designed stick. Release the puck with your stick BEFORE your foot crosses the line.
  • Agree on the point value you’re playing to. You score points if you land in a numbered box.
  • Push your puck over the back line (into the off box) and you lose points.
  • Land on a line or don’t get to the numbered boxes and you don’t get any points.

Take turns and switch ends until the points total reaches your pre-determined score amount.

Like I said, it’s easy…on paper. In other words, shuffleboard is very approachable.

Yet, in reality, I was TERRIBLE at shuffleboard. In fact, I did not score a single point unaided. My only points came when one of the pucks my friend pushed hit my previously hit puck and pushed it into a numbered square. So, without help, I couldn’t earn any…
