Iterating on Automations — Text Expansions with Typinator
Welcome back to the August of Automation 2024. Yesterday, I discussed some of the need for iteration when you take on automation work. Today, I’m going to explore iteration a bit more and share my plans to move to Typinator.
When Is Iteration Needed?
The simple answer to that question is always. However, if you’re going to dig into automation and you’re not familiar with iteration, here are some places you may see that iteration is required.
An automation that previously functioned stops functioning.
It happens more often than I think any of us care to admit. This past weekend, I had to repair two home automations that had stopped working. One is repaired. One likely requires a device replacement. Home automation remains not for the week at heart.
An automation could be better.
You made an automation and it works well. Then, one day you realize — this could work better. So, you add it to your list and hopefully get to it when you can. These improvements may be adding on a new step or connecting automations together. Whatever they are, you need time to maintain and iterate your automations.
