Over the years I have read several personal finance books and none has had the impact on me that Brent Kessel’s It’s Not about the Money. Kessel who is both a financial planner and a Yogi blends personal reflection & exploration with basic financial information.

The goal of reading this book is to discover your personal financial archetype from the eight types Kessel has developed. There are 49 brief exercises that you can work through in order to both reflect on your experiences with money and to discover your financial archetype.

The eight financial archetypes and their strengths, as described in the book are:

The Saver: Self-sufficiency, abundance

The Guardian: Alertness, prudence

The Idealist: Vision, compassion

The Innocent: Hope, adaptability

The Pleasure Seeker: Enjoyment, pleasure

The Caretaker: Empathy, generosity

The Star: Leadership, style

The Empire Builder: Innovation, decisiveness
