Just Write Something

The importance of learning in public

About 30 days ago, I signed up for an account here on Medium and I set a goal for myself to write daily. And, about 30 days have passed and I haven’t written anything.

I just continued consuming all sorts of content about the type of life I want to lead — happy, healthy, organized, productive — and yet I was missing the biggest key — I wasn’t creating that life because I wasn’t truly using that content.

In order to use content we have to curate it in meaningful ways to fit our own life. That process of curation leads to how we create new pathways for thinking and doing.

Plus, setting a goal — like to write daily — and then doing nothing but “wasting time” on the Internet consuming all types of content leads to all sorts of negative self talk and unhappiness. The exact opposite life of the type of life I know I want to lead.

So, what inspired me to finally flip over and write something? This idea of learning out loud or working out load or learning in public has been floating around in my head for a while. It originated with the book Working Out Loud by John Stepper. I bought the book and then didn’t read it, but I did skim it and read a few online articles about the content I’m sure.
