When those of us who nerd out about productivity talk about the word and what we mean by it, we often forget that we’re talking about “personal productivity”. Productivity is about how YOU get things done.

I find intense value in learning what works and doesn’t work for others. It’s part of why I write and share so much about my processes. I want to give back to a community that has given so much to me. However, I’ve learned over the years that what works for me might not work for someone else. And what works for someone else, may not work for me. I or They may adapt something or get a spark of inspiration from something that does inform their process so there is always value in the telling and in the hearing — but the goal with personal productivity is not about replication — it’s about personal application.

I also think when we think of personal productivity, too often we overemphasize the personal part. We tend to think, “I have to do it. It must be my solution.” If that were true, why would articles like this one be popular or even get read? I love reading and watching other people’s approaches and solutions, but for a long time, asking for help was NOT a go to skill for me — unless asking Google counts.
