The old saying goes, “I am my own worst critic.”

How many ideas pop in your head during the day that you just dismiss as “dumb” or “useless”?

Ideas are the fuel of our productivity and creativity. We often kill our own ideas before they even get a chance to see the light of day. Want to give your ideas a space to breathe and try to take life? Try practicing deferring judgment on your ideas for 30 days.

  1. Take a walk.
  2. Okay — this part isn’t required, but it certainly helps me get my brain going. Spend a few minutes doing whatever gets your brain going and then go to step 2.
  3. Set a timer for 10 minutes
  4. You could do 5 or 15 — just start.
  5. Capture every idea that comes in your head. NO JUDGMENT ALLOWED.
  6. Use paper and pen, use a Notion space. Use a voice memo on your phone. How you capture doesn’t matter. CAPTURE. CAPTURE EVERYTHING.
  7. Mine for gold
  8. Many ideas that seem like they are useless actually have gold hidden beneath the surface. What can you build on? What is hinting at something else that is true gold? Follow your energy. Go through your list several times. REPEAT AFTER ME: I do not have to go in numerical order all the way through my list. Build out what speaks to you.
  9. Stop judging. Start creating.
