Untangling Messy Projects

Even with careful planning, projects can become confusing and chaotic. Dates shift, deadlines slip, or information changes — sometimes all at once. When this happens, follow these steps to get your project back on track.

Set Aside Time

This crucial first step requires dedicated focus to analyze and address issues effectively. Block out time on your calendar, preferably when you’re most alert. For example, if I know I have to untangle a messy project, I typically block time early in the day which is when I’m at my best. If you can, minimize distractions during this dedicated time: find a quiet workspace, silence notifications, and clear away anything that might take you off task.

Do a Quick Pass First

Before your scheduled work session spend 15–30 minutes identifying essential resources. Do you have all the documents you need? Are there questions you need to ask?

As you do this quick pass, make sure you review or get clear on the scope of the project. The scope of a project is the boundary that defines what is and is not a part of the project. The best scope clearly states what done looks like. In a work setting, defining a scope for any new project is essential.
