#3 — What to Do When Things Don’t Go Your Way

The weather here in Indiana has been a bit d-”icey” this week. I had a planned trip to my dad’s for the weekend which I moved up to mid-week so that I could avoid driving in unknown conditions. This is my first of three lessons of what to do when things don’t go your way.

№1 — Adapt

Whether it was our cruise to the Bahamas or my weekend trip, living in the Midwest has probably been the best teacher for me that the reason you make a plan is so you can change the plan as more information becomes available.

This reflects how I cook too. I’ve wanted to try Schawarma for a while and found a recipe for Chicken Schawarma that seemed pretty approachable. When I went to the store to get ingredients, they were out of chicken breasts (only chicken thighs) and didn’t have some of the spices (substitute a spice blend). My mom taught me that a recipe is only a road map — you can detour in a lot of ways and still get to where you’re going. And, you might learn things along the way.

№2 — Abandon

Sometimes, you invest time in something and it just doesn’t work out. I use this with software tools as a testing strategy a lot. I write down what I want the software to accomplish. Usually a list of three or four things. If I can’t easily get the software to do those three or four things without significant googling then that tool isn’t for me.

Abandoning is something I think people are afraid to do. My non psychologist mind says that it is our aversion to failure. My brains says, “If only I keep at this I will find a way to make it work.” But, sometimes tools don’t do what we think they are going to do. People don’t act how we think they will act. A project doesn’t turn out the way we think it will.

Abandoning something is a great strategy as long as two things are true: 1) You learned something and 2) You don’t let the setback deter you from achieving a goal. Note that the goal might have to change slightly, but you still want to achieve that goal.

№3 — Asleep

One of my big writing projects for this week has been working on the Monarch Strategies LLC website. A website is a critical marketing tool for any new business.

One day this week, I got the About Us page added and written, added a services page — which admittedly still needs some work, and added a blog! Then, I flipped from the editor over to the actual page and got a page not available error of some type.

It was after 9 p.m. and thus far, my web page isn’t hosting tens of thousands of visitors a day. I decided to go to sleep and look at it with fresh eyes. Luckily, when I woke up in the morning whatever wasn’t working the night before had resolved itself and my website looked just fine.

So, when in doubt, sleep on it.

What I Published This Week

This week I was focused almost entirely on writing. I did a little video editing but most of that is not yet published.

Why Use A Consultant?

Some people view consultants as competition, but the way to see the vast majority of consultants is as help.

Disney Marvel Day At Sea on the Magic Trip Report

My best friend Gayle and I have enjoyed collaborating on our trip report from our most recent cruise. We’re nearly finished with it. Gayle, an authorized Disney Travel Agent, is currently posting each day on her travel agent Facebook page. Gayle is a fabulous travel agent and she can book Disney as well as many other trips.

Diversion

The next time you get a “no Internet Connection” message in Google Chrome, hit your space bar and play the Dinosaur Game. It’s a great way to pass the time while you wait for your Internet connection to come back up.
